Little evidence that chemical imbalance causes depression

People can take heart knowing they are not defective units and not necessarily wired wrong. In July 2022 it was widely reported that there was little to no reliable scientific evidence to confirm that chemical imbalances cause depression (Guardian article, Andrew Gregory, 20 July 2022).

  • This is old news. Known for decades.

The assumption that chemical imbalances caused depression led to the widespread prescribing of medications for mental health issues. Historically adopted by the psychiatric profession, the chemical imbalance theory appears to have been maintained by a range of social, political and economic factors. Whether this new information, debunking the theory, will change anything in day-to-day medical practice remains to be seen.

Most people experience a period of depression at some point in their life. This is normal. A range of social and environmental factors contribute to our moods, and to our coping abilities. Increasing activity is known to improve mood in people who are clinically depressed. Appropriate therapy can help but it takes time. Typically therapy alone, or in combination with medication, results in longer-term gains and less recurrence of depression.

Medication can work. It seems to provide some people with more energy enabling them to increase meaningful activity, and possibly the motivation to engage in therapy. Medication use for mental health issues is not a one size fits all situation. For those it does help some medications are more useful than others. And if you do try medication, don’t be put off by one kind not being helpful. Go back to your doctor and tell them. They will likely have other options to offer you.

The take home message. If you feel bad, desperate, or cannot cope - you are normal. You will eventually feel better even though it may not feel like it at the time. If you end up taking medication, don’t make that your only strategy for improving your situation.
